ICARUSS - Jacques Joubert

The majority of strokes, ischaemic and haemorrhagic, are attributable to a relatively small number of risk factors which are readily manageable in primary care setting. Implementation of best-practice recommendations for risk factor management is calculated to reduce stroke recurrence by around 80%. 

I’m Carmen Lahiff-Jenkins, Managing Editor of the International journal of Stroke and I spoke to Jacques Joubert author of the protocol paper ICARUSS, the Integrated Care for the Reduction of Secondary Stroke trial; rationale and design of a randomized controlled trial of a multimodal intervention to prevent recurrent stroke in patients with a recent cerebrovascular event.

Improved ischemic stroke outcome prediction using model estimation of outcome probability: the THRIVE-c calculation’ - Alexander Flint

The THRIVE score is a previously validated ischemic stroke outcome prediction tool. While simplified scoring systems like the THRIVE score facilitate ease-of-use, when computers or devices are available at the point of care, a more accurate and patient- specific estimation of outcome probability should be possible by computing the logistic equation with patient-specific continuous variables. What’s New in Stroke? Phase III Randomized Clinical Trials of 2012-2014 - Robert Hart

The spectrum of phase III randomized clinical trials in stroke has not been previously characterized. Randomized clinical trials otherwise known as RCTs, provide the most reliable evidence to guide the management of stroke and reflect the interests of the stroke research community.

World Stroke Organization Stroke Research Committee - Ralph Sacco

The World Stroke Organization Stroke Research Committee has been working to establish a set of research recommendations relevant to the WSO mission for Stroke Treatment, Prevention and Recovery. To establish these recommendations the committee systematically collated, categorized, and reviewed research recommendations from multiple other national, regional, and patient-centered stroke organizations. Endovascular Stroke Therapy – a new era - Michael Hill and Mayank Goyal

It all started with Mr Clean and has snowballed into a crucial moment in acute stroke management. Endovascular therapy reduces mortality and disability in stroke.

In the phase 3 ESCAPE trial, 316 patients with ischemic stroke who had a large artery occlusion were randomly assigned to standard medical care, including tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) where appropriate, or standard medical care plus endovascular intervention. No specific device for the endovascular therapy was stipulated but most patients (86%) used retrievable stents.

Stroke in Bahrain: rising incidence, multiple risk factors, and sub-optimal care, published in Volume 10 Issue 4, June 2015 International Journal of Stroke

The incidence of stroke in Bahrain is rising in the Bahraini population and has nearly doubled over the last 16 years, while incidence in the non-Bahraini population has not changed.

I’m Carmen Lahiff-Jenkins Managing Editor of the International Journal of Stroke, and I spoke to Mona Al Banna from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland-Medical University of Bahrain, Postgraduate Studies & Research and more recently from the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Salmaniya Medical Complex
